** Shropshire, Francis Caloway (F.C. Shropshire). ** -- Adjutant. Appointed (Post Death) Adjutant in Inf. Battn., Smith's Legion, Ga. Vols., April 15, 1863 by Col. Fain.

[Editors Note] Evidently, this soldier died at Cumberland Gap in December 1862 while a member of Smiths Legion and before it was redesignated as the 65th GA in May of 1863. But for this unfortunate circumstance, technically, he was not a member of the 65th. As such, his name is NOT found in the 65th's Official Muster Roll. This was brought to my attention via an inquiry and reference to a memo from Col. Fain:

"Loudon, Tennessee April 15, 1863
Hon. Aug. R. Wright
Richmond, Va.

Sir,

Inclosed you will find the certificate properly amended showing the appointment of F.C. Shropshire as adjutant, also the time he died and also that he received no pay for his services. I am very anxious that his widow should get the pay fully due him.

He was a man of sterling worth, attentive to his duties, punctual at his post and died in the service to his country as a soldier and it is certainly but just that he should be paid.

I have the honor to be your

Most obdt. and humble svt.

John S. Fain, Col."
