MUSTER ROLL

COMPANY A, "GILMER LIGHT GUARDS"

65th REGIMENT
GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
ARMY OF TENNESSE, C. S. A.

GILMER AND PICKENS COUNTIES, GEORGIA

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary Analysis
The following diagram offers a way to evaluate the Muster Roll's exit comments for a particular member of Company A. The intent is to assist the reader in assessing the comparative uniquenes of the exit route taken by that member during the 36 month active life of the unit (May 1862 through May 1865).
The head count (N=120) does not include an individual who's name is referenced to another spelling of the name. Neither does it include a named individual who is fully described as a member of another unit of the 65th Georgia. Finally, if an individual is mentioned as being a member of the unit with no other comments; that is, 'present, but not otherwise accounted for,' then that person was placed in the 'Other' category.
In addition, Steve relates the following story told to him by his grandfather:
"It seems that my ancestor was sick several times during the war. One time while his unit was crossing the Little Tennessee River, he was so sick that he couldn't make the crossing. Another man in the unit dropped his haversack and carried my g-g-grandfather across the river on his back, then recrossed the river and brought both of their haversacks back across. My Grandfather says that he had heard this story directly from his grandfather Charles. Years after his grandfather's death, an old man came walking into Ellijay and asked for Benjamin Charles. A friend directed this man out to their farm and it turned out to be the same man! My g-g-Grandfather died in 1922, so this comrade of his must have been way up in years. My grandfather remembers him staying with them for about two weeks. The man was traveling around looking up people he had known during the war. When he left my g-grandmother asked him how he was traveling since he didn't have a horse or a car and he responded by showing her his "odd-fellows" pin and saying that with that he never had to go too far without getting a ride. Sure enough he got a ride less than a mile from their home."
